LGBTQ+ History Month: Apply for a mentor!

“Your mentor will believe in you on the days when it can be hard to do that for yourself.”

Are you a University of Brighton or University of Sussex student, and identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, queer or all sexualities, genders and identities that fall under the plus? This LGBTQ+ History Month, apply for the LGBTQ+ Uni-Amex mentoring programme!

Mentoring is a catalyst for personal and professional growth. On this identity match programme, you will be paired with a professional from the LGBTQ+ Pride Network in American Express. The mentors are trained to support you, working with you to achieve your goals and exploring the things you are most passionate about.

Michèle, a student mentee on the programme said: “Being part of the LGBTQ+ Mentoring program has been really validating and confidence boosting for me. Do you know the feeling of not knowing where to start? My mentor has really helped me to focus in, taught me organisational tips that are really helpful, and has introduced me to methods on how to approach the job process.

“It also helped to talk to someone who has similarities in their cultural backgrounds, because they just understand you and where you have come from. Lastly, your mentor will believe in you on the days when it can be hard to do that for yourself. Your mentor is here to support you and it’s been a wonderful process to be a part of.”

Lillian, Michèle’s mentor said: “I felt that the mentoring relationships were built on mutual understanding and trust. It helped me see things from my mentees’ perspective and focus on bringing the best out of them, which translates back to my work from a leadership perspective. My advice for those who are interested in being mentored is that to communicate openly with your mentors and have fun.”

There are currently mentors waiting to be matched and start working with you – apply today and begin making steps towards your goals! Applications for this programme are open to University of Brighton and University of Sussex students at all levels of study, all year round – find out more and complete the form here.

If you have any questions about the programme, please contact the team on momentum@brighton.ac.uk.
