Huskup design competition - cup in blue

Reusable Cup Design Competition

Attention all current students studying at the University of Brighton! We’ve teamed up with Huskup to launch an exciting competition to design the artwork for their reusable beverage cup. The winning design will be put into production as an exclusive limited edition (only for the University) and then sold within the hospitality outlets across the university.

The theme for the competition is: Brighton Life – provide a design that is inspired by your experience of life at the University of Brighton.

Closing date for design submissions is Monday 17 January 2022 at 12 noon.

Entries will be judged by a special panel made up of staff from Student Operations and hopefully a special guest Alumni from the art world.

Design entry guidance

First of all, you’ll need to download the blank template for cup’s dimensions and shape then base your entry using the template.

Once you have completed your design, use this form to enter the competition providing your contact details and to upload your artwork. Paper submissions are possible too via our Book & Bean cafes or Food Hubs across the university.

We’ve provided some tips and guidance on how to enter as well as the terms and conditions below.

About the cup

The Huskup base material has a natural beige colour – could you use this to your advantage? The natural colour immediately lets customers know this is an eco-friendly cup.

The silicone sleeve sits 23mm from the rim of the cup, will this affect or cover up an important part of your design? The template shows where the band sits so you can avoid this area if you wish.

The cup is not a flat surface, if you want to include text on your design, please bear this in mind.

You can choose any colour for the lid and silicone sleeve, you can even choose a different colour for the lid to the sleeve.

For inspiration, why not visit Huskup’s shop online to see their own designs. Plus, we’ve provided some examples as formatted using the template:

Design tips

  • Continuous patterns work well.
  • Got something to say? You can type it up on the sleeve (Type is only one colour and size 20 x 60 mm).
  • Please outline all type, saving that part of the design as an image, rather than letters. If you want your text to be straight you’ll need to warp it by 4 or 5 % (follow the curve in the template).
  • Sadly, we can’t print neon, fluorescent, metallic or shiny colours so please don’t include these in your design. Please only use CYMK colours.
  • Unfortunately, we cannot accept photographic designs.
  • Format: PDF, JPEG, TIFF, or Photoshop. CMYK 300dpi

A sustainable past and future

In September 2017 the University of Brighton Hospitality Operations launched its MyCup campaign with the goal of reducing the number of single use cups being thrown away. Customers who purchase a hot drink in a reusable cup save money on the cost of their drink and reduce the waste of single use cups.  In the first 9 months of the campaign there were over 75k drinks bought in a reusable cup and to date that figure is now over 351k.

As part of this campaign we have sold reusable cups in all our hospitality outlets, nearly 10k sold so far and in 2021 we started a new contract with Huskup.

Huskup is a reusable cup made from natural rice husk, the outer hull of the rice grain, a natural and robust material that could otherwise be burnt at the mill. They contain no plastic, melamine, BPA or toxins and the cups themselves are biodegradable.
