Staying safe when you’re out and about

When you’re part of a large student population, it’s worth being careful about a few things. Some of this information may seem obvious, but it’s important to read the following safety advice before heading on a night out.

As a University of Brighton student, you are also part of a local community. Please be considerate and respectful to your neighbours and local community when leaving or returning late at night.

Before going out at night
  • Tell someone where you’re going
  • Plan your journey home, check public transport timetables or book a trusted taxi company
  • Check windows/doors are locked (but also that you have your house keys)
  • Consider taking a cheap wallet/bag with you and only carry the money you need
  • Keep a record of important numbers before taking your phone out at night
  • For nights out, festivals, gigs and trips abroad:
    • Consider swapping your expensive smartphone for an old handset
    • Use it with a prepaid SIM and give the number to anyone who may need to contact you.
When you’re out
  • Always stay with friends, and don’t take shortcuts on your own
  • Be cautious about inviting a stranger back to where you live
  • Tell your friends what is happening and make sure they know where you are
  • Be careful when getting money out of cash points, particularly if you are drinking or the cashpoint is located in an unlit area
  • Keep your bag zipped up and don’t ever leave it unattended
  • Likewise, keep a close eye on your mobile phone at all times
  • Never leave your drink unattended and don’t accept drinks from strangers
  • Be aware that if you are drinking you may have less of a sense of danger
  • Know your limits and be assertive if someone is trying to pressure you to drink more
  • Avoid confrontation; walk away if you can
  • Don’t be hesitant about reporting an incident or situation.
