Celebrate Pride 2018

Join us in the Pride Parade

Summer is coming and that means it isn’t long until the biggest and most joyful event in the city’s calendar, Brighton & Hove Pride 2018!

Celebrations will be taking place across the city from Friday 3 – Sunday 5 August, with the jewel in the crown being the annual Pride Community Parade on Saturday 4 August.

The Pride Parade brings the whole community out on to the city’s streets as over 300,000 people participate and watch this exciting visual spectacular. Last year the university joined local community groups, public service providers, representatives from political parties and faith groups, corporate brands and trade unions to show our support for diversity in the Pride Parade.

The LGBT+ Staff Equality Network Group and other staff members marched with the LGBT+ Student Society and as well as being an incredible day for everyone involved, our colourful presence was very positively received by spectators throughout the city.

Emily Foyle, co-chair of the LGBT+ Staff Network, said:

“Marching in Pride was such a rewarding experience, there was such a great atmosphere and we all had a brilliant time. It was wonderful to see the reaction we received when current students, graduates and members of staff spotted us from the sides – we had lots of cheers and high fives!”

Brighton Pride 2018 is all set to be a riot of colour, with the theme ‘Colour My World’, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic Rainbow Flag. The university is building on last year’s success with an even larger foot-marching presence in the Parade, and the LGBT+ staff and student societies would like to invite everyone to get involved and support this fantastic event.

This year the university will have some places available in a vehicle, prioritised for people with mobility issues or for whom walking long distances is difficult.

Julie Fryatt, Director of People, LGBT+ Ally and chair of the university’s Stonewall Steering Group, says:

“It would be fantastic to welcome colleagues to join us as we take part in this year’s Pride Community Parade. Make sure to register so you do not miss out on one of the places available. It promises to be a great day, and a brilliant opportunity to be part of the biggest LGBTQ Pride event in the UK.”
