Do something good in 2015 – try volunteering

Alongside looking great on your CV and gaining valuable skills, volunteering gives you the chance to meet new people and makes you feel good!

By volunteering you can get involved in your local community and make a difference while you get to know where you live. You can receive training opportunities, certificates and even qualifications.

Last summer, a group of arts students volunteered to design and create artwork for the new Youth Hostel Association in Brighton’s Old Steine.Volunteers

Maria Orengo, Annette Lawrence, Tim Harrod, Eik Leknesund Elnes and Niall Gormley created some amazing, unique work inspired by the themes of arts, culture and Britannica.

Annette, a 3D Design and Craft BA (Hons) student, said that the chance to volunteer was invaluable for her.

“My work is usually on a small scale so it was quite a challenge working on such a large scale but I’ve gained a lot by going out of my comfort zone.

Being on my course and taking part in this project has given me the confidence to put my work on public display. I hope it has benefited the community by celebrating the creative side of Brighton.”

This experience will help the students beyond university and was organised by Active Student who set up volunteering placements.

Take a look at Active Student’s website for current volunteering opportunities. You can also call them on 01273 644 145 or email volunteering@brighton.ac.uk to find out more.
