Summer fund to help students facing financial challenges over the summer

Each year the university offers financial support to students over the long summer holiday.  Applications are assessed on a case by case basis and if you you are made an award, it is paid to you direct from the university and you do not have to pay it back.

Who can apply

All full time, UK and EU students who are continuing with an undergraduate course at least until the end of December 2023. You must be fully enrolled on a standard length course and not intermitting.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee awards for all applicants, so priority will be given to students in financial hardship who fulfil any of the following criteria:

  • You have caring responsibilities – for a child, relative, partner or other adult
  • You have health issues or are a disabled student
  • You have no family contact
  • You are unable to return to the family home for the holiday period
  • You have not been able to secure work due to placement or study commitments
  • You have overlapping tenancies or have to pay double rent for any period over the summer

If you do not fulfil any of these criteria, you may still apply but please tell us as much as you can about your situation in your cover letter.

You can still apply for this fund if you have already received the Student Support Fund during the academic year.

How to apply

In order to apply for the Summer Hardship Fund you need to complete the short form and provide supporting evidence such as bank statements, rent or mortgage liability, DWP benefits (if applicable) and a covering letter fully explaining your reasons for applying. You must email your completed form and scanned evidence to the Funds team direct:

When to apply

You need to submit your application and all supporting evidence before midnight on Friday 7th July 2023. We are unable to consider applications received after this date.

All successful applicants will receive a payment direct into their bank account by the end of July.

Other important information

The Funds team look at applications in date order. We acknowledge applications within 1 working day but assessments take  around 2 weeks to process, so please wait for 2 weeks from the date of the acknowledgement before you check the progress of your application.

If we require any additional information, we will contact you using your uni email address and this is also how we will notify you of the outcome of your application.

You must enter your bank details correctly on Student View to receive an award payable to you so please check your details are entered correctly.

There is no right appeal for any unsuccessful applications.

Our term time funds including the main Student Support Fund will reopen next academic year and we’ll send out more information about that nearer the time.

If you have got any other questions about your funding, student finance or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact us: We are here for you all year round.
