Summer Fund is now open for students who need financial help over summer

Each year the university offers financial support to students over the long summer holiday. Like the Student Support Fund, this is a non repayable award and applications are assessed on a case by case basis.

Who can apply

All full time, UK and EU students who are continuing with an undergraduate course. You must be fully enrolled on a standard length course and not intermitting.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee awards for all applicants, so priority will be given to students who fulfil the following criteria:

  • You have caring responsibilities – for a child, relative, partner or other adult
  • You have health issues or are a disabled student
  • You have no family contact
  • You are unable to return to the family home for the holiday period
  • You have not been able to secure work due to placement or study commitments
  • You have overlapping tenancies or have to pay double rent for any period over the summer

If you do not fulfil any of these criteria, you may still apply but please tell us as much as you can in your cover letter.

You can still apply for this fund if you have already received the Student Support Fund during the academic year.

Important caveat for Health Science students enrolled on long courses

Health Science students including Apprentices (both February and September cohorts) enrolled on long courses more than 45 weeks in duration are not eligible for the Summer Fund, but may still be able to apply to the Student Support Fund until Friday 7th July if they have not already made an application this academic year. Please email funds@brighton.ac.uk or calls us on 01273 642888 for more information.

How to apply

In order to apply for the Summer Hardship Fund you need to complete the short form and provide supporting evidence such as bank statements, rent or mortgage liability, DWP benefits (if applicable) and a covering letter fully explaining your reasons for applying. You can email your completed form and scanned evidence to the Funds team direct: funds@brighton.ac.uk

When to apply

There is only a limited application window of 4 weeks – the fund opens on Monday 12th June 2023 and you need to submit your application and all supporting evidence before midnight on Friday 7th July 2023 but we do ask you to submit the form in plenty of time.

All successful applicants will receive a payment direct into their bank account by the end of July.

Other important information

The Funds team look at applications in date order so please allow at least 2 weeks for a response.  If we require any additional information, we will contact you using your uni email address and this is also how we will notify you of the outcome of your application.

There is no right appeal for any unsuccessful applications.

Our term time funds will reopen in Autumn and we’ll send out more information about that nearer the time.

If you have got any other questions about your funding, student finance or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact us: studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk. We are here for you all year round.
