Student Advice Service – Money Matters

News from the Student Advice Service at the University of Brighton

University fund to help pay for deposit and guarantor schemes

The university has a range of hardship funds which students can apply for if they are experiencing  financial difficulties.

We have recently received an additional grant from the Office for Students to help support students in most financial need and we are using this to help students in different ways.

We have listened to your concerns and feedback from the SU about the rising cost of living and you have told us how landlords, private rental companies and letting agents are pushing continuing students to make deposit payments for next academic year (September 2023) earlier than before. We also understand that competition in the sector is so high that students have to act promptly to get the best deals.

In response to this we have developed a new one-off fund to help those students who have been most impacted by these arrangements – the Deposit Assistance Fund

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from full time, continuing, undergraduate UK and EU students.

When to apply?

This is a time limited fund so applications are open from now until Friday 5th May 2023

How to apply?

There is a short MS Teams online application form to complete and you need to provide supporting evidence such as bank statements and proof of payment. We also ask you to upload a covering letter fully explaining your circumstances.

Successful applications will receive payment from 11th May 2023.

Other important information

We have prepared a detailed list of frequently asked questions, so please click on these first and if your question has not been answered, please contact the Student Advice team by email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk or phone 01273 642888.

We anticipate a high demand for this fund and unfortunately we cannot guarantee awards for all applicants, so priority will be given to students who fulfil the following criteria:

  • have health issues or are a disabled student
  • have no family contact
  • have caring responsibilities for a family member
  • do not have a guarantor

Our year-round funds remain open and available as usual.
