£150 Council Tax energy rebate payments end soon

You may be aware that earlier this year the government announced a package of support to help people with the rising cost of energy bills. The first initiative was a £150 payment which they referred to as the ‘council tax rebate‘.

A common misconception is that you need to have a council tax liability to claim this rebate. This is not correct. The scheme has been attached to council tax for convenience of payment, but is there to help people with the cost of rising utility bills.

Most households have now been invited to claim and/or received this rebate, as most payments were credited to the nominated bank account associated with their council tax direct debit. However, there are payments waiting to be claimed from local councils, especially in relation to households who have no liability to pay council tax – which includes students.

Following a recent meeting with the Revenues and Benefits team at Brighton and Hove City Council, we want to encourage all eligible student households to claim this rebate, so please check your eligibility and be sure to make an application by 30th November 2022, which is when this scheme closes.

Key eligibility criteria:

– You must be registered as living in a property which is in band A-D

– You were in attendance on 1st April 2022

– If you live in an HMO (House of Multiple Occupation) you would need to have your own individual tenancy agreement

Even if you live in a property above band D, you may still be eligible for a discretionary payment.

Each local council is operating the scheme slightly differently so do check with your council. Links to different local schemes can be found below:
