Student Advice Service – Money Matters

News from the Student Advice Service at the University of Brighton

Financial support for rent, IT equipment and daily living costs

As part of our annual Student Money Week campaign which ran from 15th – 19th February, the Student Advisers had the opportunity to gatecrash some lectures and host a few live drop ins to tell you about the range of additional funds available for students who are facing financial challenges at this time. You may have seen us at one of these events.

Following on from that campaign, the Director of Student Operations and Support sent an email to every student outlining how the university is spending the funding which the government has recently released to us.

The budget for these funds is limited and unfortunately we are not able to guarantee an award for every applicant.

We want to remind you of the different funding streams which are currently available:

University hardship funds

These are year-round funds for all students. There are different applications forms and processes for undergraduates, postgraduates, EU, international and home students. Please check the eligibility criteria and read this guidance document before applying.  If you have got any questions about the funds, please contact us: studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk.

Additional COVID-19 related government support

This is for students who need financial help to pay for IT equipment, laptop repairs etc to support them with continuing remote study.

If you got any questions or issues regarding your learning needs, please contact your SSGT for help.

This is for students who are renting in the private sector, but who are currently or have been unable to access their term time accommodation due to lockdown restrictions. This is a time limited fund which closes on Friday 26th March 2021.

Applicants to this fund should demonstrate that they are in financial hardship and priority will be given to those students who are from low income households but not in receipt of full funding or a University of Brighton bursary.

This fund is not available to students currently living in their term time accommodation, who may instead want to apply for the Student Support Fund.

If you want to talk about your funding, budgeting or any other financial matter, please contact the Student Advisers

Best wishes
