BEWARE current telephone scam ghosting as NHS ‘Test and Trace’

Unfortunately scammers pretending to be NHS staff have developed a new ploy to target people telling them they may have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19

We have all heard about the genuine Test and Trace scheme which has been rolled out across the UK (confusingly using slightly different names) and the scammers are using this as an opportunity to pray on our anxiety and conscience.

What happens?

Callers say they are from NHS ‘Track & Trace’ and they tell the person that they have been in contact with someone suffering from COVID-19 and the individual needs to purchase a test.

They then request the person’s bank details and explain that test and results cost £500.

What to look out for

  1. Check the name
  2. Check the telephone number – the official Test and Trace number is 0300 013 5000
  3. The genuine NHS Test and Trace service will NOT ask for payment or any bank details
  4. Don’t call back on a premium rate number, eg those starting 09 or 087

What to do next

If you suspect a scam or are worried that the call is not genuine, hang up. The official Test and Trace number is 0300 013 5000.

If you’re contacted by a different number and been asked for payment, contact Action Fraud online.
