The sun may still be shining and the clocks haven’t gone back yet, but the sooner you get organised with your Christmas travel arrangements, the cheaper the tickets will be.

You may have only been back at uni for a matter of days, but the more money savvy amongst you will know that the longer in advance you book, the bigger the bargain, and many of the larger rail companies have released their advance tickets over the Christmas holidays already.

Most advance tickets go on sale 12 weeks in advance, so if you’re able to commit to a fixed date and time of travel you can make substantial savings. You can also use your 16-25 railcard on advance tickets, which will save you even more.

You may not know that as well as companies like the Trainline, you can also look at specific rail providers such as Virgin, Great Western or Southern to look for a wide range of rail tickets throughout the UK and if you are going further north than London, single tickets are often cheaper up to London then onward from London.
