The Journey

THE LOWDOWN ON PLACEMENTS & INTERNSHIPS

EXPERIENCE IN INDUSTRY TAKES MANY FORMS:

  1. An Insight Day or week in your first year
  2. A summer internship at the end of your first year
  3. A placement year at the end of your second year
  4. A summer internship in the summer of your second year before you start your third year.
  5. A placement year at the end of your Masters year

So what is a placement, internship or insight day/week?

Placement Year: A year-long paid professional placement working in your chosen industry during your penultimate year/after your Masters study at University – a role that enables you to gain hands-on practical experience relevant to your degree. The large majority of these roles are paid salaried positions.

Summer Internship: A summer internship, usually between 4-12 weeks in the summer period between your studies, these could be paid or unpaid. If they are unpaid we recommend that the role (if full time) is no longer than 3 weeks.

Insight Day/Week: A day or week at a large employer in your first year in your subject area to introduce you to the world of work and the practices of that company. A great way to network with people in industry and to investigate which areas of industry you would like to go into.

POSTGRADUATES ONLY:

As part of your MSc Data Analytics or MSc User Experience Design course you have the option to do a placement year after your year of study. If you choose this option, it is added to your degree and your degree becomes two years. Not many companies offer a traditional ‘placement year’ for postgraduates so your year can be made up of the following:

  • Apply and get a placement year role in a company for 11-12 months
  • Apply and get a fixed term/maternity job role for 12 months
  • Apply and get a graduate scheme job role (if international you would have to apply for the graduate route visa to make sure you can stay during the duration of the graduate scheme)

SO, IF YOU WANT TO GET AHEAD AND EITHER OF THE ABOVE SOUNDS INTERESTING, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER!
