Computing project exhibition 2023: Andrea Dhelpra, Computer Science BSc(Hons)

The highlight for me was the opportunity to apply everything I learned in my final project. This project was personally meaningful to me, and I enjoyed the process of putting my knowledge and skills into practice.

Tell us a bit about your project

I became interested in the blockchain field in 2020 during my second year of studies. I was getting really excited about the things that are possible thanks to this technology, so I started my side project with some friends and decided that it would be a great idea to commercialise a cryptocurrency trading bot. This suited very well with my final project, so I decided to use the support given from the university to start building a prototype.

My supervisor helped me understand how I could make the bot stand out from the competition and how it could be further improved. This was very helpful guidance from an experienced point of view. In addition to that, the research materials and resources available at the university, such as textbooks and access to online papers, helped me perform an extensive literature review that allowed me to become more informed about what I was building.

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

When I moved here from Italy, I really found that Brighton was a very diverse university and I soon made friends from all over the world. I started with zero knowledge of Computer Science since I never took this module in school and the course taught me everything I need to know to be prepared for working in industry.

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study a computing degree and why Brighton?

I have always been passionate about scientific subjects like Maths and Physics, but I wanted to explore something new that would also allow me to build products that could then be marketed. Computer Science was perfect for this, as in my opinion it combines the logical aspects of other sciences with the practicality of engineering. Brighton is known to be a vibrant city and I believed that studying here would be a great experience.

What have been the highlights of your course?

Throughout my course, I appreciated the emphasis on developing software rather than just taking exams. However, the highlight for me was the opportunity to apply everything I learned in my final project. This project was personally meaningful to me, and I enjoyed the process of putting my knowledge and skills into practice.

Did you do a placement year?

For my placement year I was an IT Specialist at Deloitte in their Bristol office. My responsibilities were identifying risks and vulnerabilities in IT systems of clients such as Deliveroo, Ocado, or MUFG Bank. I really enjoyed my placement year, as it gave me valuable experience in a customer facing role, as well as knowledge in cyber security.

What are your plans after graduation?

The course exposed me to the most adopted programming languages, concepts, and tools and these have been essential in helping me understand my career aspirations. I am excited to begin my new role as a Junior Developer in Deloitte’s Product Engineering team in September.
