Over my years at university I’ve become more and more engaged in the work, as I’ve found what I’m passionate about and what I’m really good at; this has definitely been thanks to some inspiring lecturers.
Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences
LaserStitch is a process that I’ve developed which can be used to create wearable products through an unconventional use of a CO2 laser cutter. By using a laser cutter, you can essentially create a clothes micro-factory, meaning that manufacture can be ethical and circular, avoiding the use of sweatshops thousands of miles away. I wanted to address the fashion industry’s poor ethics and lack of accountability, if by anything just starting a conversation. Some big influences for the project included the work by Unfold Studio, particularly a project by Dries Verbruggen as well as the Pattern Project.
How have you found your course and time at Brighton?
Over my years at university I’ve become more and more engaged in the work, as I’ve found what I’m passionate about and what I’m really good at; this has definitely been thanks to some inspiring lecturers. I’ve seen the course progress massively over the past four years and I believe that it’s at the best it’s ever been. Product Design is definitely time consuming, but you also get to have a lot of fun along the way.
How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Product Design?
I chose Product Design because for me it meets somewhere in the middle of art and technology, two things which interest me greatly and neither of which I wanted to sacrifice for the other. As a designer you have to develop a wide range of skills, from sketching to film making, this is another thing that led me to the course.
What are your plans after graduation?
In the future, I hope to be able to further develop LaserStitch and to collaborate with other designers. I am also looking to start an internship somewhere where I can refine my skills in a professional context.
