In the UK, the main points of the law are as follows: The legislation, introduced on the 1st July 2007, now makes it illegal to smoke in all public enclosed or substantially enclosed area and workplaces. The ban includes smoking on vehicles which serve the public and are used for work purposes. So now you won`t see anyone smoking in the public .
Smoking is increasingly marginalised in the UK. You can smoke outside, but many people will find it irritating. It is illegal to smoke indoors in cafes, restaurants, and pubs: all public buildings, in fact. Some pubs will provide sheltered outdoor smoking areas, but not that many, nowadays. As recently as 1974, 45% of the British population smoked. This was down to 30% by the early-1990s, 21% by 2010, and 19.3% by 2013; the lowest level recorded for eighty years. An annual No Smoking Day has occurred in March since 1984. In 2015, it was reported smoking rates in England had fallen to just 16.9%; a record low.
It is unlawful to sell or give tobacco products to a minor, and to smoke such tobacco products if the individual is younger than 18 years. It is illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under age 16. No minimum age for consumption and possession in public. You must be over 18 to buy cigarettes in the UK. If you‘re under 16 the police have the right to confiscate your cigarettes. From Thursday, smoking in vehicles carrying children will be banned in England and Wales which is a very powerful policy in terms of road safety and health problems. It’s now illegal to smoke in any vehicle when there is someone under the age of 18 inside. Adults aren’t allowed to smoke even if the car is parked with the door open, they are smoking out of the window or the sunroof is open. Hope in the future, people will stop smoking under the strict smoking rules and laws.
Compared with China, the laws in China are also very strict from government, while the practice is not so effective, you can see people smoking in park or even in the restaurant which is so annoying, so maybe China may need more powerful rules to restrict smoking. For teenager buying cigarette, there are some shops which are selling cigarettes to them secretly ,so the awareness of people should be raised.
It’s good to see this up-to-date information. What are your opinions about the laws in China and the UK? What do you feel should happen in the future?
