What the fudge is E-Safety???

I bet you are all wondering what E-safety is exactly…..well, lets take a look at the definition below for an accurate description.

e-safety is a term which means not only the internet but other ways in which young people communicate using electronic media, e.g. mobile phones.  It means ensuring that children and young people are protected from harm and supported to achieve the maximum benefit from new and developing technologies without risk to themselves or others.

(Safeguarding and Standards, 2011)
This basically means that it is a set of guidelines used to stop people from taking advantage, bullying or stealing from you!
What a nice thing for people to do aye?

Well….. let me highlight a few things that might see everyday on social media that make you rethink the dangers.

Lets go through these one by one and the examples of how they can harm you.

  1. Personal information: by having your full name, DOB, hometown info or email address, gives opportunity for viewers to steal your identity which is usually done for fraudulent purposes.
  2. location services= By using this you are allowing people to know where you are, this could give them the opportunity to stalk you, mug you, burgle your house or even assault.
  3. Grooming=Grooming is when someone builds an emotional connection with a child to gain their trust for the purposes of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or trafficking. Children and young people can be groomed online or face-to-face, by a stranger or by someone they know – for example a family member, friend or professional.

  • Take part in sexual acts via webcam or smartphones.
  • Have sexual conversations by text or online.

Did you know, that the law states that is it illegal to create or share explicit images of children (under the age of 18) even if the person sharing it is a child themselves?

  • It is also against the law to take an explicit photo or video of yourself or a friend.
  • To share an explicit image or video of a child, even if it’s shared between children of the same age.
  • To possess, download or store an explicit image or video of a child, even if the child gave their permission for it to be created.

As of January 2016 in England and Wales, if a young person is found creating or sharing images, the police can choose to record that a crime has been committed but that taking formal action isn’t in the public interest.(NSPCC, 2017a)

The consequences of Sexting!

Image result for thinking pictures

You should never think lightly about Sexting, whether it be a pic, video or a text message. there is always the possibility of your messages falling into the wrong hands. Even if they are messages that have been sent to you!

Your trust in the recipient may be abused!

Your messages could be sent to others or posted on social media. This could be seen by many people you know like; family, friends and even people you may not know, which is even more terrifying.

In the past many people have sent these types of messages thinking that they could trust the people they have sent it to. But when that trust was abused it leaves the victim with a lot more than just embarrassment to deal with.

Many victims will also suffer from abusive comments regarding the image/video/message that had been sent.for example people could comment about;

  • How the victim should kill or hurt themselves.
  • They are ugly.
  • Say that no one likes them.
  • Their families will be disgusted and disown them.
  • They will never find anyone to love them.
  • ETC.

All of these comments can have devastating effect on the victims and their families, not just physically but mentally as well.

So please! Do not let yourself become a victim. Always think before you send!

Has this ever happened to anyone you know?

Would you have ever considered the possibility that this could happen to you?

Do you think people consider the consequences before they send these types of messages?
