Keynote by Professor Yannis Pitsiladis

Professor Yannis Pitsiladis, Professor of Sport and Exercise Science at the School of Sport and Service Management, and Director of the SESAME research group, attended and presented a keynote lecture at the Athletes of the Future, 1st International Congress.

The congress coincided with the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and the second edition of the Brazilian Symposium of Genomics and Sports and Brazilian Symposium on the Immunology in Sport (Sao Paulo, June 8-14, 2014 – Teatro Marcos Lindenberg – Unifesp – Campus Sao Paulo).

Professor Pitsiladis’ keynote lecture was entitled Genomics of elite sporting performance: What little we know and necessary advances. 

Other high profile speakers included Jiri Dvorak, Chief Medical Officer of FIFA, Professor Theodore Friedmann (Head of WADA’s panel on gene doping, UC San Diego, USA), Professor Hidde Haisma (University of Groningen, The Netherlands, Chairman of the Department Therapeutic Gene Modulation, WADA-supported scientist), Professor Claude Bouchard (John W. Barton, Sr. Endowed Chair in Genetics and Nutrition, Pennington Biomedical, USA).

This event was free and open to scientists, physicians, coaches, athletes, relevant professionals and the general public; more than 200 people attended representing countries from all the five continents.
