The product must have a powder volume of at least 184.4 millimeters3.

Elide fire balls (competitor product) have a powder volume of 184.4 millimeters3, which covers a surface of 4sqm to 9sqm. Since this is proven to be enough powder to extinguish a small fire by competitor products, this product must provide an equal or greater quantity.

This brief was met by developing the optimum cartridge and unit size to reduce waste space.

 

 

The product must have a projectile range of at least 8m2.

The size of an average living room is 7.6 x 6.1m (Tonks, 2019). The product will therefore cover a projectile range of at least 8m2. For rooms larger than 8m2, users must install two or more units.

This brief was met by developing a series of sketch models to find the best working launching mechanism.

 

 

The product must self activate if the user does not respond within 30 seconds

The product is designed to detect a fire and alert the user to take action. If the user is away from home or their mobile device, they will miss this alert. The fire cannot simply be allowed to spread, so the product must kick in and take action.

This brief was met by explorations with Arduino coding.

 

 

The product must weigh less than 1.5Kg

The product will be wall mounted, so it is vital that the product is light enough to do so. On some occasions, the user will manually override the product, meaning they will be required to lift it up.

This brief was met via appropriate material selection and material reduction studies.

 

 

The product must be able to successfully recognise when a fire is present and assess the level of risk

Regular false alarms cause users to develop distrust for an alarm. The product must be able to remove this distrust.

This brief was met by using four sensors. Co2, heat, smoke and Infrared. Users will be alerted when a sensor is activated, but will receive a more intense alert when three or more sensors are activated, making it easy to differentiate between high risk and low risk alarms.
