Relief Printing Workshop

In this printing workshop we were introduced to “relief printing” which involves cutting a stencil which you then roll printing ink directly on to. You then get the piece of paper your wanting to print onto and you soak it in water for a minute, once soaked you use 2 other pieces to dry the wet paper so there is no surface moisture. This damp paper allows the ink to soak into the paper better and you get a richer print. You then place the stencil onto the paper and sandwich them in between 2 other pieces. This then goes through the press which adds pressure and allows the stencil to print onto the damp paper.

For my stencil I cut out a silhouette of an image I had taken of my friend skateboarding, I then added some trees and a sun behind him. I wanted to add some pattern also to see how it printed. The lighter print on the left was made after I did the actual relief print, I used the roller and lots of pressure to pick up the print and apply it to another piece.
