Assessing climate risks and creating climate resilient coastal communities – 16 May 2019

The University’s School of Architecture and Design hosted this lecture on 16 May 2019 at the Sallis Benney Theatre, delivered by Dr Andrew Russell, Senior Science and Policy Analyst at the Committee on Climate Change..

Dr Russell discussed the latest research on climate risks to coastal homes and communities. He explained the work of the Committee on Climate Change and the long-term challenges of managing England’s coastline.

Dr Andrew Russell is Senior Science and Policy Analyst at the Committee on Climate Change. He analyses flooding and coastal change and was the lead author for the Committee’s report on Managing the Coast in a Changing Climate. He has previously been a university lecturer, associate editor of a scientific journal and a science communicator. The Committee on Climate Change (the CCC) is an independent, statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008. Its purpose is to advise the UK Government and Devolved Administrations on emissions targets and report to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change.

Hosted by the University of Brighton’s School of Architecture and Design, this lecture was the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South East branch 2019 Brighton Rock lecture, and a University of Brighton ‘Responsible Futures’ research initiative.

The lecture was followed by a Q&A session and a chance to network with professionals, researchers and students.
