TAMAR JEFFERS MCDONALD : BEWARE MY LOVE! HOW ROMANTIC SUSPENSE PAPERBACKS REWORKED THE GOTHIC

This presentation examines the romantic suspense novel of the 1960s-1970s, a genre which became and stayed a publishing phenomenon for two decades. During this time, the Gothic produced over 3000 novels, with both their narratives, and their paperback packaging, appearing extremely homogenous. While I will be discussing both text and visuals, I will concentrate on the latter, exploring the repeated imagery and uncovering its links to both the older 18th Century Gothic novels and the wartime cycle of books and films which produced Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, amongst other works.

This will be a 20 minutes presentation, with 10 minutes for Q&A
