Themed Events: Sustainability and Climate Emergency | 28 March 2024 11–1pm – Room 204 Grand Parade
This forms part of the philosophical themed Research and Knowledge Exchange events to foster and grow our research culture and environment and to identify research strands which are key to our school ethos and future development.
Sustainability and the climate emergency are symptoms of the extraction and use of fossil fuels, and the imbricated histories of their industrial-colonial-capitalist development. Phasing out fossil fuels will be the most significant movement towards decarbonisation: using products made from renewable energy, developing new materials, and living in more equitable and just societies. Achieving these shifts, however, requires new ways of thinking, communicating, engaging, creating and practicing. How do we best facilitate this through research and knowledge exchange in the context of the academy?
This event on Thursday 28 March 11.00 – 13.00 will explore how 6 different researchers in the School – ranging from art, fashion, textiles and media – have addressed sustainability and climate concerns in/through their work. Presenting a short overview of their research practice, the researchers will consider the following questions:
- How does sustainability and the climate emergency inform your research/discipline/practice?
- What methods do you use in your research and how have these changed in view of the climate emergency? How would you like to go forward as a group? The purpose of the event is to identify common ground, to spark conversations across disciplines and practices, and to use these to facilitate future developments.
