In this session I will discuss how my research is informed by two major archives, one online and the other physically situated in a library 5485 miles away. Despite the obvious difficulties inherent in consulting material in the latter, I hope to show why both are essential to my work.

As a Hollywood film historian, I frequently use the Media History Digital Library (https://mediahistoryproject.org/), which provides online access to an extensive collection of digitised movie magazines. When in Los Angeles, however, I spend my time looking at hard copy holdings at the Margaret Herrick Library, the archive collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (https://oscars.org/library). In order to use both resources successfully, I need to search appropriately, and in this presentation I will provide practical advice that can be transferred to other archives.
