EXHIBITION: Åsa Johannesson, And I wanted to see it: my queerness in the best light – Dorset place | 12-21 October 2023 with private view and performance 17 October 2023 5.30-7.30 pm

Soon to be held at the University of Brighton as part of Photography Research Group (PIPPIT) activities, this exhibition shows the recent work of Åsa Johannesson.

Private View with performance: Tuesday 17 October 5.30 – 7.30pm

And I wanted to see it: my queerness in the best light comprises of prose poems and photographs and is based on collaborations between Åsa Johannesson and the individuals she has photographed for her work, The Queering of Photography (2015 – 2023) which was exhibited earlier this year at the Centre for Photography (CFF) in Stockholm, Sweden.

While the portraits, presented as 5 × 4″ contact prints, are testaments to the dialogue between photographer, sitter, camera, and the photographic studio, the primary component of this exhibition are the prose poems. Informed by conversations between photographer and sitter some time after the shoot and written as monologues, these writings approach concepts traditionally associated with photography — representation, identity, viewership, and the apparatus — from the sitter’s experience in front of the camera.

Åsa Johannesson studied photography at the Royal College of Art (PhD, MA) and the University of Westminster (BA). With her practice, she examines the relationship between queer identity, representation, and photographic materiality through photography, installations, and poetry. Most of her work is produced together with LGBTQ+ individuals and communities in London. Her work frequently shows in the UK and internationally, most recently at Centrum för Fotografi (CFF) in Stockholm and Queer Britain in London. Her research monograph on artistic strategies in queer photography, Queer Methodology for Photography (Routledge), is published in February 2024. Åsa lives and works in London and in her hometown Växjö, Sweden. She is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University of Brighton.
