Update from the Doctoral College Team

Research Mentoring and Leadership Scheme We have recently launched our Research Mentoring and Leadership Scheme for PGRs. Under the scheme, successful PGRs applicants would act as mentors to undergraduates or PGTs, and gain valuable experience of mentoring and managing a research project/activity.   The deadline for applications is 28 March. We appreciate this is a short timeframe but we’d be grateful for your support if one of your supervisees expresses an interest in the scheme or if you thought it appropriate to encourage an application. Belfast Exposed; Proof of Ghosts

Fergus Heron, Senior Lecturer in Photography shares… “In our Studio Gallery, Joan Alexander, A Belfast exposed Future’s artist, navigates a sudden bereavement with the raw ingredients of photography and a blog. She uses the space to explore the traumatic tangle of time that follows death. Working with test strips, shadows and tracings, images are dismantled and rebuilt to pursue signs of presence. Proof of Ghosts structures solitary grief and opens the question of how do we still mourn?”   Joan says “This project began before Coronavirus and lockdowns hit us so it feels really good to have it going up in a physical gallery space soon. Sue Gollifer, Principal Lecturer, Digital Media Arts shares news of her latest Research Activities:

In February, Sue Gollifer was an invited guest speaker for a UNESCO ‘City to City presentation. This project marks the cities commitment with the importance of cooperation and support to art and creativity as a major force for the sustainable development in these times of uncertainty.  It was an online occasion which was attended by the artists, curatorial gurus, VIPS from all 13 participating UNESCO Media Arts cities, and some senior UNESCO officers. Safety Net – Commissioned Public Health Film

Safety Net – Launch of an internet safety animated film co-designed and co- produced with and for adults with learning disabilities to advise on the safety of using the internet. Commissioned by Social Care Services East Sussex County Council it will be launched formally in February 22.   The film’s key designer and director is Rhiannon Barton (2021 graduate from Graphic Design) who self identifies as having a learning disability worked with adults with lived experience and inclusivity teams to develop the commission. Rhiannon won a competition set by Community21 across the school that received entries from three courses. The film already has national interest and has also been designed to be used as a teaching  and workshop tool that will impact for health and social care professionals and their service users.

Connecting Civic to Climate Action Event – 22nd March 2022

I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to promote the work of Community 21: Social and Sustainable Design Research Group alongside esteemed colleagues at the forthcoming Civic University Network and EAUC event on 22nd March 2022. I have been asked to highlight some of our recent Community21 projects that integrate students into live, impactful sustainable design research in communities locally and internationally. My presentation has to be short but there is a panel discussion after and if there are particular University messages or aspects you would like me to highlight I welcome your thoughts.
