Sustainable Healthcare Principles

This module is open to all disciplines including:

  • Healthcare clinicians, managers, researchers, educators and policymakers
  • Healthcare estates, procurement and support roles
  • People from sustainability, waste, design, materials or other related sectors with an interest in sustainable healthcare

Module Information 

Module Code 

NA6185 (level 6) and  NA7185 (level 7) on Falmer Campus, Brighton

Content 

  • Relevance of planetary health and the Sustainable Development Goals to healthcare systems
  • Climate justice, human rights and ethical issues related to planetary health and sustainable healthcare
  • Sustainable procurement of healthcare supplies
  • Principles of sustainable clinical practice:  prevention, patient empowerment and self-care, lean systems and low carbon alternatives
  • Energy use in healthcare
  • Circular economy and waste management in healthcare
  • Specific considerations for sustainable healthcare: infection prevention, pharmaceuticals and specialist areas of practice
  • Sustainability and quality improvement in healthcare using the SusQI framework

Entry Requirements 

Level 6 entry criteria:

Diploma of Higher Education/Higher National Diploma/Foundation Degree (or equivalent award) or evidence of an ability to study at Level 6 (BSc Level)

Level 7 entry criteria:

BSc degree (or equivalent award) or evidence of an ability to study at Level 7 (Masters Level)

** Normal entry requirements for international students apply
