Project Management and Leadership through Work Based Learning

Who is this module for?:
Qualified Nurses or Midwives who have been sponsored by one of the local NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) (Health Visiting or School Nursing pathways) or Community Specialist Practice Courses (CSP) (District Nursing or General Practice Nursing pathways (at level 6 for the BSc and level 7 for the MSc). 

This is a mandatory module which runs across semesters 1 and 2.  

Module content
This module aims to enable learners to develop leadership and management skills through the planning, implementation and evaluation of a work-based project. Content will therefore be agreed between the learner, practice supervisor, practice assessor and the academic assessor.

The learner will develop a learning agreement and the following topics will be covered and explored over the course of the module: 

  • Models of project planning
  • Critical appraisal of literature, validity and reliability of tool development
  • Leadership skills and managing change in the workplace
  • Managing data / evidencing practice development
  • Exploration of communication strategies and collaborative working
  • Critical reflection of project management skills required, and their development by the learner throughout the project.

Content/learning materials will be managed by the learner and clarified through a process of negotiation between the learner, practice supervisor and practice assessor in practice and their academic assessor. 

Module Entry Requirements   

 Applicants at level 7 would normally hold a health-related degree at 2:1 or above and have completed recent study in the last five years. Applicant’s at level 6 must demonstrate achievement of 120 credits at Level 5 or have a health-related Diploma of Higher Education (minimum of 120 Level 5 credits) or degree and have successfully completed recent study within the last 5 years to at least diploma level. 

Module assessment  

There are two practice assessments:  

  • Skill 1. A skill to be agreed between the practice assessor, learner and practice supervisor that is service user focussed/related  
  • Skill 2. – Present a conference style poster (10 minutes for level 6 and 15 minutes for level 7) on project management and the change process and critically reflect on the learning with the practice assessor 

The academic assessment is the development of a Project Portfolio which will be equivalent to 8,000 to 10,000 words. This will be presented in three parts:

  • Part 1: Learning Agreement which is made up of the learner’s rationale for embarking on the project, a SWOT analysis, their five identified learning outcomes and two skills, action plans, and details of how the learner will demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes and the skills.
  • Part 2: The project proposal which will include a concept map/flow diagram relating to the proposed project design and a Gantt chart or equivalent planning methodology and a project model.
  • Part 3: Evidence of the project’s implementation through the writing of an evaluative report summarising the key elements of the project. It should include a critical analysis of the impact of the project on practice/role development. The report should contain a critical appraisal of underpinning theory, relevant literature and research.
