Acute Kidney Injury
This module is for nurses and allied healthcare professionals working with patients affected by renal failure and acute kidney injury. This module will enable the student to develop understanding of AKI disease process and critically explore the preventive and therapeutic management within their scope of practice.

Content
Renal anatomy and physiology, electrolyte and fluid balance. · Haematology, blood biochemistry, AKI bio-markers, acute screening and acid-base balance. · AKI pathophysiology, hyperkalaemia, co-morbid diseases, high risks factors and other renal diseases related to AKI. · Renal replacement therapy for AKI: acute haemodialysis, haemofiltration, acute peritoneal dialysis and therapeutic plasma exchange. · AKI prognostic tools: AKIN and RIFLE. · Pharmacologic and fluid management of AKI. · Dietary management of AKI. · Psychological issues and support of patient with AKI. · AKI care commissioning, health economics, current government drivers and international guidelines.
Entry requirements
Applicants should be working in the UK as a healthcare professional for a minimum of 2 days per week, working in a clinical area with support available from a designated mentor. Applicants at level 7 would normally possess a bachelor degree or equivalent or have evidence of the ability to study at postgraduate level
Assessments
Case study exploring the pathophysiology of a patient with AKI and critically analysing the diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical interventions in the management of the patient
