Promoting Health, Wellbeing and Resilience Through Participation

This module is suitable for anyone with a relevant first degree who is interested in how people can enhance their health, well-being and resilience by being supported to participate in a broad range of areas of human activity. Previous students have included occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, health promotion and public health specialists, education support practitioners, amongst others. Content

The module will introduce students to key research, theory and policy related to: biological/psychological/social and occupational perspectives of health and well-being; the World Health Organisation ‘s perspective on participation as a dimension of health; resilience; social justice and participation; and, constructing plans for developing services/projects. Examples of real-world projects that use participation to enhance health well-being and resilience will be shared such as: sports projects; nature-based projects; leisure in later life; mental health recovery colleges; youth activity projects. 

Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. 

Assessments

The module assessment task is to produce a proposal for a project service development in an area of your choice that supports participation (eg in sport/leisure/art/education/employment/nature) to enhance health well-being and resilience. Students may choose one of 2 options: 

  1. A 500 word written summary plus a 25 minute oral presentation (including 10 minutes for questions/discussion 
  1. A 500 word written summary plus a 2500 word written critical analysis of the proposal.
