GLOBAL LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Meet students from China and Saudi Arabia who are studying English at the University of Brighton Language Institute (UBLI) to further their careers in teaching and health promotion. This is also a chance to meet staff from UBLI and ask about support at the university for students whose first language isn’t English.

Brighton Sign Language Society presents…BSL Taster Class

We will be introducing the letters of the BSL alphabet and some simple introductions. By the end of this short session you will be able to sign your name and say where you are from.

Syrian baking Masterclass

Brighton Community Kitchen

Members of the Syrian community in Hastings will give a demonstration of traditional baking techniques. We will then have a chance to try the results and find out more about The Hastings and Rother Refugee & Asylum Seeker Project and their buddying scheme. This event is free but due to the limited numbers of places we do ask you to book a ticket.

Please note – the sweet treats being prepared will include gluten, eggs, nuts, milk, sesame, and other allergens. If you have any dietary requirements please contact us for more information before booking a ticket.

one world craft morning

Artist and maker Victoria Lovell will be teaching techniques for weaving on card using paper, fabric, plastic and other mixed media. We will be making squares that represent something about ourselves and our culture.

Silent Disco Beach Clean

Meet on Brighton beach next to the Palace Pier

A joint event for One World Week and Green Week. All equipment (including gloves, and a litter picking stick) will be provided (courtesy of Surfers Against Sewage).  Help us clean up a section of Brighton Beach, and take part in an outside Silent Disco at the same time! We will be asking students to contribute to the playlist with music from all over the world.

International 5-Aside Football Tournament

Join us for this very special international football tournament! Teams will be competing for the glory of being crowned the Eastbourne One World Week champions. You can register your own team of 5 players in advance by emailing orientation@brighton.ac.uk or come along on the day and join one. We welcome mixed teams (men and women) and you don’t have to play for your home country – we can allocate you a team if you prefer!

Film Screening…. Human Flow

Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.
