There are a number of opportunities for final year undergraduate students and early stage career professionals to undertake research placements

The options are below.

The Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU)

Who-Any final year undergraduate or postgraduate student studying at The University of Brighton

The Brighton and Sussex clinical trials unit (BSCTU) was established to provide practical support for clinical researchers in the Southeast and beyond and supports a range of disciplines, contributing to the evidence base for the diagnosis, management and prevention of disease.

What you can experience- development of funding applications, trial design, study management, quality assurance, data analysis, dissemination and trial close-down.

Clinical research facility (CRF)

Who-Any early-stage professional (see eligibility criteria) working in University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

CRFs provide dedicated departments and expert staff to deliver high intensity experimental research, to enhance opportunities for research and enabling research into novel interventions or treatments.

What you can experience- screening, recruitment, scheduling, administration of treatment, data management, data collection and reporting.

Where– Brighton and Sussex University Hospital


Shadow a research active academic

Who– Any final year undergraduate or postgraduate studying in Brighton, Kent, Chichester. Any early stage professional (see eligibility criteria) working in East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

Provides the opportunity to see the practicalities of academic life. Breaks down barriers and myths about how academics work. Provides fresh ideas and insights about how to be more effective in the shadow’s own work. It allows you to explore specific careers and to get a realistic picture of that job.

What you can experience- gain insight into the roles and responsibilities of research active academics, reflect and learn from the experiences of others, see the bigger picture and understand more about how the University functions, can be used as a way of “testing out” possible career options.

Where– There are opportunities in the University of Brighton, the University of Chichester and the University of Kent.


Shadow a journal editor

Who– Any final year undergraduate or postgraduate studying in Brighton, Kent, Chichester. Any early-stage professional (see eligibility criteria) working in East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

This provides a valuable learning experience for those aspiring to publish or individuals interested in becoming editors themselves. It involves following and observing a seasoned editor through the manuscript review process to selecting, organising and assessing the manuscript proofs ready for printing to gain insight into their creative process, decision-making, and overall workflow.

What you can experience, the publication process from initial submission of manuscripts, the peer review process, accepting and rejecting of manuscripts and the final proofing and publication of them as well as the process of writing the letter from the editor.
