Ditchling Dye Day

Our September workshop was spent mostly processing and dyeing with fresh and dried indigo leaves, fresh woad leaves and also with Saxon blue dye.

Woad leaves torn up quite small, then boiling water is poured over them.

Fresh Indigo Leaves cut small.

Dried Indigo leaves

Woad leaves stewing in boiling water for about an hour.

Pouring the dye liquid from container to container many times until a blue froth is visible on the surface. Then the Hydros is added to reduce the oxygen and the vat is ready for dye stuff.

We also prepared a vat using indigo and vinegar

…and a vat of Saxon Blue
