The internet is fun and easy to use. It opens up your life to new experiences, images, information, ideas and enjoyment. However, do you know the hidden dangers every time you browse the internet?
- Whatever device you use to search the internet is exposed to attacks from Viruses and Spyware.
- These are also known as Malware or Malicious Software.

So how can you protect yourself from
Hackers?
- Never click on something your not sure is safe.
- Look for the padlock at the top of the page.
- It looks like this:
- The padlock means that the website is safe.
- So now you know what to look out for you are safe?
No, not yet………
- When you are searching the internet, the results you get are either automated or sponsored.
- So what is the difference?
- Companies pay to put adverts into the searches you do online.
- Some of these are related to what you were searching for but some are not.
- Some of these links may be harmful to your computer, shocking and upsetting or illegal.
- At your school there is a filter that blocks these.
- Care should still be taken not to click on anything you are not sure about.
- The filter is like a fishing net that catches results of internet searches that could be harmful and prevents you from seeing them.
- It protects you.
- When you type a search you must make sure that the spelling is correct.
- Here is an example:
- If I type in the word ” run” and I want images of people running I will get some like these:
- However, the letter “r” is very close to the letter “g”on my keyboard so I could type “gun” in error and see images of guns.
- This won’t necessarily cause me any immediate harm but I do not want to look at them.
- What should you do if you accidentally click on something and discover that it may be harmful to you or your computer?
- Talk to your Teacher, Support staff, carers, parents or anyone you trust.
- It is alright to make mistakes and click on links and websites on the internet but you must tell somebody.
The film below shows how easy it is to click on something harmful.
