Statement

My practice shift’s between still life and the everyday. Shifting my attention between singular objects and scenes. The current pandemic has given me an outlet to continue being inspired by the everyday. Also allowed me to ‘make up’ and change the appearance of common household items. Humour and abstracted elements have entered my work. This has shifted the way I see objects. Keeping my phone and sketchbook with me always, I constantly gather photos of scenes, tables, and objects that I find interesting. Using them as reference points for later paintings. By focusing on personal, often intimate aspects of daily life I prompt my audience to reimagine elements of their own everyday existence. As a result, the way I look at the world has changed. From once experiencing the mundane in terms of aesthetics alone I now see past the object’s exterior, contemplating the abstract spaces that they can infer. I would not say that my paintings are purely abstract, however I am interested in the space that is created throughout my paintings. Space and form have become more apparent in my paintings than previously. Painting on smaller canvas, has allowed me to be instinctive and quick with my work but also bring a sense of intimacy. I want my work to be recognisable, by visionary but also by the comfort and movement of the paint.
