The Malagiri School

Janet Clemence and Beth Callingham

Earlier in the year we heard the tragic news that one of our 4th Year students, Beth Callingham, had died. This was a great shock and quite unexpected – Beth was such a kind, thoughtful and enthusiastic person. She had been supportive of the Malagiri Project and had been knitting items for sale. As Beth was an Art Specialist it’s decided that any donations in her memory should go to the School in Malagiri to purchase art materials. Love and thoughts go out to Beth’s parents and all her friends and family.

In late April our very dear colleague, Janet Clemence, an inspiring, supportive and wonderful maths lecturer and teacher in the School of Education was taken very ill. She requested that no flowers be sent but that donations in her memory should go to the Malagiri School to purchase maths equipment. A large sum of money was donated including one single donation resulting in £19,000 which will pay for all the running costs of the school for the first year of operation. Additionally, this school will have the finest maths equipment to use!!!

There was a huge gathering of Janet’s family, friends and colleagues at her memorial in Stanmer House and loving, funny and poignant memories of Janet flowed. Love and thoughts go to her husband John and sons Owen and Huw.

Janet and Beth will be a great loss to the profession – they will be very fondly and lovingly remembered and they will hold a very special place in the classroom in Malagiri overlooking the valley with Annapurna in the distance.
