I attend this workshop to know more about technical setting when doing an outdoor shoot. I’ve done an outdoor shoot before but really random with the setting. So i want to come to this workshop to know more how camera work outside. Unfortunately only 2 people come to this workshop and it wasn’t sunny that day, but we still have some try with the camera. Having the reflector is really helpfull when doing an outdoor shoot, but we will need more than 2 or 3 to help holding it. Personally I enjoy the gold side of the reflector which make the skin tone warmer on gloomy day, I guess the silver one work better in a dark place like studio room.

I also try with the light meter which really help with the setting of camera such as shutterspeed and f stop. However, my camera doesn’t have a wide range of f stop, Chris told me it doesn’t need to be exact just go with the closest number.

I really enjoy the workshop, it make me feel more confident when doing an outdoor shoot

As i planned this shoot might the easiest so I chose to do it first. It will in the studio, I had studio induction 2 weeks ago so I can use it now. I want to have fake grass under and 2 models will pose/act like in the utopia forest with lots of big and strange flowers. I came to this studio before and had a chat with Richard all my studio photoshoot ideas and asked him for light setting advise. For this shoot, I just want to light be simple so he will help me set up the light and softbox. However there are one pose I want to create from the above, he shows me that I can use the machine to bring the camera up higher angle and I will have the ladder to do it.

I also asked him for advice for outdoor photoshoot and other shoot I planed to do. I also measure the studio to make sure my set design and other props fit.

After the Premiere workshop last week, I really enjoy making video therefore I sign up for After Effect to see the different between  softwares and see what I can do with it for my project.

We learned to rotate the png images, distorted and add effect for it. We also learned to remove the background of the video and add another one which is very cool. However, I would say this software much harder than Premiere Pro, it has so much buttons and steps which very hard to remember. I think I will have to practice more if I want to use it for my future project

I went to this workshop because I want to improve my photography skills. I want to do more photoshoot in this project. I haven’t used this studio before so the tutor gave us a very thorough induction and the safety. There are so much things need to be noticed in the studio that I haven’t thought about which is very helpful if I want to do photoshoot in here in the future.

After the induction, we had a chance to try with the lighting. I still haven’t remember all the name and the function of each light but I roughly know how they work and how they affect the final photo. Tutor showed us the adjust camera setting in studio, the important of ISO and aperture. The slides show us lots of example about how one light can change the mood of the images and we can add more light to create the dimension of the images. Colour card is the one I haven’t heard before but it is good to know about it and we can borrow it in the studio.

I now know some basic lighting set up how to create a portrait. It is really interesting that tutor said we can always send them email about the reference and they will show us how to achieve that lighting. I will definitely book it just to experiment with the lighting set up.

From the topic we got, Eilidh come up with the idea that the crim scene when people use the tape to mark the body

Also inspired from the movie Dogville, when they use the tape just the mark the house and property.

We choose the part near in the ground floor that we can make the body half sit and half lay down. My group has 6 people and everyone all help in preparing and creating this

We used tape to mark 2 body, the cabinet near there is quite useful that we can use them to put clothes and fabric for decoration

To make it related to fashion, we decorate with lots of clothes and the cause of death is over consumption. Also we cut the word ‘it’s a crime to look this good” like the newspaper cut out

We all satisfied with the results, and it look cool even from the above or near, one classmate said she feel more involved when see it near which is very interesting compared to see from the above

Thursday we have brief for this module, everything seems very confusing at this stage. There are so much cool example that Elosie show us, as well as the example sketchbook from previous year. I would definitely look at them more in my own time and read the handbook again so I can understand.

We had final presentation this day, i was happy that finally the end. However, I was too busy last Monday to prepare for presentation and the print so I didn’t check Lauren’s 10 videos that she put together. After the presentation in the morning, we have to show however when I check it, she posted them in her private youtube video and didn’t even change the name. Creating a youtube account wasn’t necessary in the handbook however i believe if you want to submit something as a group, you need to be professional at least change the name or the avatar pictures

I was a bit angry and texted to group chat then I left the group chat. However, Lauren and her friend cyber bully me. Here are some evidences. Lauren roles in the group was visual promotion but she rarely came to class as well as the photoshoot (only came to 2 photoshoot over 6). Most of the behind the scene we have to send her, but she complained that we didn’t send her earlier (they were on the share google drive a while ago).

She blocked me on Instagram at the end.

at the beginning of this project i was very looking forward to create a cool magazine with other creatives, cause i’ve been working alone for first year so I want to hear and work other people.  Unfortunately things don’t go right and my group has been tear apart so basically only 3 people working. Josie and Pearl did amazing on their roles, however as an art director I have to take over the other roles as well.

The good side is that i learned so many new things, such as graphic design, creating gif and filter, learn more about social media and layout, etc. However, it was challenging for me to take over so many things, and communicate with team. I had very short time to finalise and print the magazine as I had to do all the layout and graphic last minutes. While Lauren not creating any other contents I had to edit lots of videos and made 2 more interviews with my friend for the video contents. At the end, we finished 2 video interviews in one day and i had time to edit one more behind the scene to post on Instagram.

For printing part, it was super hard as no where accept to print the sixe I wanted which 29x29cm so last minutes we had to change to 21x21cm but still very expensive so I had to pay for the one that we’re gonna submit. I’ve contacted with a printing service to print 25 copies later, but the sample one we have to go to Brighton PRINT CENTER which is quite expensive but very fast. If I had more time, I would probably find a better solution for this or we can create more things to raise fund  and promote the magazine.

I would say i’m not enjoy at all working in this group, it makes me lots of stress but i’m mentally stronger now, I don’t even need to ask them for their advice I just make decision myself which faster and more efficiently. I really want a group work is the place where we can learn from each other and support each other to make a final work, however, this group makes me stress a lot. Also I feel so lonely in class as most of the time i was left alone even in the presentation mock up day. It was very frustrating to communicate with people that aren’t replying and always have an excuse. ( I haven’t seen Lauren for a while and when we talk about presentation this is an excuse that she made)

I understand that everyone having their own problem, but this is not professional and not respectful to the group.

In overall, I am appreciate my flatmate helps with graphic design, mentally support and my friend Mia that she helped me with the video interview. I am proud of the outcomes of this project and all the new skills that I learned.

We had mockup presentation on Tuesday, however i’m quite busy with finishing the layout for the magazine so i couldn’t prepare the presentation carefully. Josie sent me her articles on Friday 13th so it’s very late compare to other group. I also have parttime job at the weekend so i don’t have much time to prepare it. One the day, only me and Pearl presented so it quite short and less than 10 minutes. We will have to wait for Josie comeback to practice.

I took 3 roles in this project however I will try to make them not to long. Chris gave us some feedback about how we should present and try to keep the slide slower. I will have to make the gif at the beginning longer so we can try to introduce our magazine while it running.

At this stage i still finalise the Indesign layout because we still wait for 2 more illustration from other illustration/fine art student. However on Friday i finally can make a test print. Unfortunately we have to reformat the size of magazine from 29x29cm to 21x21cm as the price is too expensive and we quite late now so we don’t have much choice in printing service. My priority now is just to have one final print to submit then we can care about printing to sell later.

The printing really stress me out because only me in the group try to look for a printing service, i’ve called and emailed lots of places to ask but most of them refuse to print in big size or in square. I feel a bit regret to choose this size, but it does make my magazine stood out and it matches with the theme. After the test print, i have to resize some text and the page number because they look too big compare to the size. The quality and images are quite nice, I also want to design a jacket for the magazine like the real vinyl. That probably easy to to as I will print in A3 and cut it out.

I have texted Josie before the holiday so she can send me all the articles and interview so I can make a draft layout. However, she not replying to me until Thursday when I had to ask Chris and Emma to contact to her. But i have create a sticker pack when i’m in holiday so we have something to promote our magazine and sell to gain fund. I also made some collages and retouched photos that can go to the magazine. Because I don’t have any articles so I can’t do much.

I also contact to Leah-graphic designer in group chat but she ignored me twice again. So I had to take the work myself. It was such a hard job for me as I’m not good at graphic and Indesign. My flatmate Stella helps me a lot with graphic and I had to use her laptop as well because my laptop isn’t strong enough. We brainstorm ideas for each articles and interviews how they should be layout in the magazine. Unfortunately, i can’t ask my group cause they are very slow and we already late compare to other groups so I just have to decide everything myself.

Because of the shortage of time, I haven’t made many experiments so some layouts don’t look very nice. However in overall I think they look not too bad and still readable.
