STUDY SKILLS IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY

Post 1- The beginning and initial thoughts.

For the project we have to produce a series of creative work alongside descriptive writing pieces that focuses on an image we received to analyse. We then need to explore our own ideas and development skills to result with work that reflects this, linking to the original image. When first seeing the image (‘Anna’-Milano 1986 by Alfa Castaldi) I was slightly apprehensive as the image is not something I would’ve initially chosen myself. After progressively studying Anna Piaggi more I realised this does not entirely represent Anna due to the black and white themes, contradicting to her usual bold and bright work she produces herself. However I shifted mindset to actually enjoying the image as I liked how it contradicted to Piaggi’s usual work, whilst still remaining in her style. I particularly appreciate the unusual elements such as the stance, harsh outlines and odd furnishings. From this, I have started creating my sketchbook where I am experimenting with inspiration from the image such as working with flat-lays and comparisons with other images.

POST 2- Getting started.

After starting my sketchbook, I also began creating my editorial. The editorial had to be a double page spread (‘Doppie Pagine’) that reflects a piece of work we have created ourselves after studying the image given and our interpretation from it. When first analysing the image and noticing the elements I enjoyed such as the harsh outlines and unusual lack of colour compared to how Anna Piaggi presents herself, I knew I wanted to incorporate this into my double page. I also studied Piaggi outside of the image and noticed key factors such as her love of hats and how she’d always wear a highly unique piece of headwear such as the iconic Union Jack top-hat or hats embellished in feathers. Therefore I was certain to incorporate this into my work to proven my studies of Piaggi. In the end I created a piece that was primary rough sketches overlaying a similar black and white photograph of Piaggi. This ensured a childish look to reflect her personality but also became an affective piece of work that illustrated unusual silhouettes and outlines, colour and character. All things that Piaggi is iconic for.

POST 3-  finishing up

Now that i’ve nearly finished my editorial Im feeling more confident about my work progression. With my sketchbook, I had a slight creative blank however once I got into the rhythm of adding to it I succeeded in creating a few good and developed pages. My pages mostly reflect my thoughts and development behind every stage of the process. From receiving the image and unpicking/ annotating it to showing experimental skills and ideas. Now the only thing left is my analysis that consists of description, contextualisation and interpretation. I think this aspect of the brief will be challenging for me as timing and word count is something I struggle with. When it comes to writing I thoroughly enjoy it however I tend to spend too long on it and most definitely go over the word count. Thats why when I approach it I will ensure I spend a solid amount of time on the piece as well as keeping strict with my word count!
