Week 1: Introducing intercultural communication: key terms, importance and challenges- Creative and Critical Reflection

Creative and Critical Reflection

Write a brief paragraph (100 words) exploring the cultural dimensions that shape you using the definitions of culture discussed in the lecture and reading.

Now write a critical reflection (300 words) addressing the following:

  1. How do you understand your culture as a system of shared meanings? A site of contestation? As a resource
  2. How you are positioned in relation to others in terms of race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, religion and ablenesss.
  3. How your positionality influences your standpoint on the world around you and how you engage in intercultural communication

(Modified from Sorrell, 2016)

Note: When writing your critical reflection, make sure that you

  • define your terms such as ‘standpoint’ ‘postionality’ ‘culture’ with the support of academic literature
  • use the reading given to you in class as a starting point
