Methods

Methods: What methods will be using and why? (250-500 words).
The project will employ a mixed method approach using anonymous questionnaires to obtain
quantitative (and a small amount of qualitative) data and a focus group to obtain qualitative data.
Questionnaire 1: Pre-module, base-line questionnaire to investigate 2018 GY336 students’
perception of their own confidence in, and ability to understand topics to be covered in the
module. To be issued in on-line format to all participants (max 43 students) in January 2018 prior
to the start of the module. Deadline for completing will be set to 5th February 2018 (before the first
lecture).
Questionnaire 2: Post-teaching questionnaire to provide quantitative data to investigate students
perceived confidence and ability to understand the topics taught within the module so far with the
inclusion of flipped classroom content. To be issued in on-line format to all participants (max 43
students) in April 2018 towards the end of the module. Deadline for completing will be set to the
end April 2018.
Focus Group: Post-teaching focus group to provide qualitative data to investigate students
perceived confidence and ability to understand the topics taught so far within the module with the
inclusion of flipped classroom content. To be conducted with 6 students (3 BA and 3 BSc) after
lecture 9 of the module.
Quantitative data will be assessed via the application of basic statistical techniques and qualitative
data will coded and assessed appropriately. The overarching project aim will be achieved via an
integrated assessment of findings from both quantitative and qualitative data.
