I started this project thinking about how I could incorporate nostalgia and comfort into my project as these were two things that make me feel ‘at place’ and at ease. I then started to think of the specific places where I do feel like this and I set out to photograph them in a way that I felt best suited to this project and the direction I was taking it in. I was a novice at photography, but in my lessons, I was shown how to experiment and change the depth of field and shutter speeds, a technique I had not undertaken before. I found out that I seem to like to photograph isolated places and environments as opposed to necessarily populated or entity-based photographs. I have always been interested in this certain aesthetic of liminal spaces or real-life spaces that evoke an ethereal feel, and I was glad I was able to incorporate and construct my own take on it whilst experimenting with different types of photography. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to express and show the places where I feel comfortable and collate them in a way that they flow as a set of photographs encapsulating my ‘Sense of Place’ and my interpretation of it.
Additionally, this project also allowed me to take a step back and properly appreciate not only Brighton but the beautiful surroundings I have in general that I frequent. This project also helped me identify places that I do indeed feel most at ease, for example, the woodland path that I featured in my portfolio, or the overpass. I have always had an interest in photography and producing my own personal form of certain types of media and I’m glad this project allowed me to explore that further. Furthermore, I learned how to construct a portfolio-style blog which I had no knowledge of how to do prior.
