Experimentation/Initial Ideas

In the first lesson of the module, we were tasked with taking images of the surrounding areas utilising different exposures and shutter speeds. This was useful for me as I hadn’t explored different exposures before and so I was able to give that a try. Straight away I was able to capture an image that evoked the sort of Liminal Space direction I was going toward in my project.

I then tried to decide whether I was going to have people in my photos or not. I took a similar photo of the same place with and without a model and I came to the conclusion that without a model would be better as liminal spaces tend to not have people present and are merely almost the point of view of the only person who is present there and so if I had people in my photos this may disrupt that isolating immersion, the photos seem to come out more surreal the more there is a lack of people or sentient life. I also ideally wanted to portray an almost point-of-view perspective from my photos, almost as if you’re seeing that through your eyes.

I started to think about whether I was going to have mostly interiors or exteriors in my project. I decided to look at some different liminal space interiors and exteriors so I could get a feel for the type of atmosphere trying to encapsulate. I also wanted to experiment with different shutter speeds, so I could get different levels of brightness and exposure depending on the photo, I looked at photos that encapsulated the same liminal space ethereal feel, but had different levels of brightness. I then thought about perhaps how I could further play on the point-of-view perspective I wanted to portray in my project through the photos and thought I possibly could have photos that are two opposing directions of the same location, almost as if you’re turning around when seeing both the images.
