Portfolio

For this project I wanted to photograph buildings, places, objects and everything in between that meant ‘home’ to me, which is how I first interpreted the brief ‘Sense of Place’. I began experimenting by taking photographs around my hometown in Portslade, Brighton. I photographed regular objects, such as lampposts and houses as I wanted to show the beauty in places that would not usually be given a second glance. My aim was to capture the character and beauty of the village that I often take for granted!

To begin with I visited some of my favourite places and places that held meaning to me, but was not specific in what I was photographing. After multiple visits to these places I noticed the majority of images I had taken had elements of nature and greenery. I also noticed that I had recurring colours within the images. Because of this I experimented by photographing my garden and certain features within it, for example the birdhouse which had similar colour themes.

Whilst researching photographers, I discovered that I wanted to take ‘in the moment’ photographs, without staging the photo too much. I loved how photos that were taken naturally, without intervening seemed to convey character and emotion in the images. Because of this I took my camera with me when I went out and took photographs whenever something caught my eye. One evening I managed to capture some photos of the sunset which turned out to be one of my favourite images.

I chose these 10 photographs as I feel they worked as a set and all remind me of home and my sense of place. I wanted to keep in photographs such as the birdhouse and lamppost as my goal was to photograph the everyday, something that I would not usually take notice of.
