Response to ‘In Plato’s Cave’

After reading in Plato’s Cave by Susan Sontag the following points struck me:

  • Photography allows us to ‘collect’ the world.
  • Photography is an event that gives us a sense of nostalgia
  • Photographs can be considered an aspect of a truth
  • Photos are like representations of the world
  • Photography can be compared to hunting and shooting
  • Photos can be related to fantasy

For me the most significant point that resonated was the idea of photography creating memories as that is relevant to my project  because my project is based on memories and nostalgia as well as the brining together of family. I was also struck by the point that cameras can be used as weapons because it makes us feel in charge and in control of what is depicted.

Anothony Thornton

I chose Anthony Thornton as a photographer because his style of photography is similar to mine in that we take pictures of banal, everyday things and make them interesting because of the way we compose them. based on the project called ‘ Alone Together’ which I looked at he said ‘When you live in a city, it’s hard not to acknowledge the distance between everyone despite their physical closeness. This project has opened my eyes to the many ways in which we all inhabit this world in such fleeting harmony. It has shown me how each of us finds aloneness in our own way. It’s the togetherness that is often overlooked.’ I think it’s really interesting how he takes pictures of ordinary people living ordinary lives and makes thme seem more interesting.
