FOCUS Magazine

For our brief this Semester, we have been put into groups to create an entire magazine, from initial concept to printed and bound. I am in a group of 5: 2 specialising in art direction and imaging, 2 specialising in PR and visual promotion, and 1 specialising in photography and styling. Specialising in art direction and imaging, along with Kat, means that we take lead in art direction, layout, space, imaging, film, etc. During this project, I am taking the lead in the layout of the magazine, art direction in photoshoots and the moving image.

Between us, we decided on the concept of the magazine. The magazine is a quarterly magazine, based on the ever-changing seasons throughout the year. It will look at change of mood, and how that affects out everyday lives and fashion. Featured will be content that relates to the Autumn season.

Our main article will be looking at the cultural appropriation of the Day of the Dead festival, which originates from Mexico and occurs at the end of October/beg of November. Our secondary articles will be on Mental Health in the Fashion Industry (World Mental Health Day occurs each October), and an interview with Brighton-based artist, Louise Brooks.

Our main photoshoot, Sunday Blues, will combine photography with illustration to add an extra layer of depth to the narrative. The story shows a typical Sunday throughout the day, and the intimacy that appears as the weather gets colder. One of the secondary photoshoots is Golden Hour, based on the golden light that only appears at sunset, as the days become shorter. Our other photoshoot is related to the Day of the Dead, focusing on the make-up of the event.
