Exploring Mattes – LUMA Keying and Sky Replacements

The goal of this project was to create a realistic sky replacement. This is achieved through several tools and techniques including LUMA Keying, which is a tool used in After Effects that analyses the luminance of a clip to create a transparent mask, This allowed us to utilise the brightness of the sky to create a mask which we then used to replace the sky. In a separate channel, we created a matte through a combination of manipulating and duplicating channels and the use of curves to create a separation of the black-and-white values. We then have to add the tracking to the new sky to match the original footage, This was the first step we did and is something that applies to other projects where objects are being added to existing scenes such as when incorporating 3D Assets to a scene. There are overlapping techniques when it comes to green screen masking and sky replacements and therefore believe I could use this technique on future projects where there is luminance.
