Animation 1

This was my first animation, and it was the one that not only proved my idea would work, but that it was actually very effective. By keeping the trigger image present throughout the video, the animation is able to add context and reveal something about the image while still keeping it relevant. In this instance, the image of the three characters is only recognised to be a family portrait once it’s placement on the draws, under the window, next to the flowers is revealed. The cat then entering to knock the photo off the draws, emphasises this idea of a typical family home and gives greater context about the characters and the story.

The main challenge I found with this technique, was the fact that any frame where the portrait was moving (when it gets knocked off), because of the way Procreate animation works, I had to re draw the entire image around it. This meant redrawing the wall, set of draws, flowers and Cat over and over again while the portrait was being adjusted. However in the frames where the portrait is still, and only the cat was moving towards it, I could simply duplicate the frames and only have to redraw the cat. The only objects I also had to redraw in those frames were the window and the flowers because I added the window last minute and changed the flowers slightly, so therefore had to go back and do the same for all the frames. All this has determined how detailed I could make my drawings, I found the more simple each feature was, the smoother the animation looked.

I really like the effect of starting out in black and white, but then the animation brings out colour. Because I would be using artvive, I wanted my animations to really come to life when the image was scanned,  and I believe this technique definitely accommodates that idea.

I think the only element I would add if I had had more time, would be something moving in the window. Perhaps clouds or birds going by. Maybe even a dogs snout peaking inside to introduce another character from the story.
