Ukrainian

Ukrainian is the language spoken in Ukraine. It was a minoritised language due to the establishment of the Soviet Union. Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, many fought and succeeded in making it the country’s national language.

During Soviet times, Russian was the dominant language in the country and Ukrainian was mainly spoken at home. With time and political changes, Ukrainian has become more and more common. Recently, because of the war, those who spoke little Ukrainian have made great efforts to learn the language of their country in an act to strengthen their self-identification and to show patriotism and pride in their country.

Ludmyla tells us of her experience with the language in her country and how she maintains it while living abroad.
