~ 09.10.20 ~ Dissertation Tutorial with Eloise

This tutorial was super helping for both helping me decide on my dissertation topic but also finding my direction for my Fashion Comms project.

So for my dissertation I am now particularly looking at French Cinema particularly between 1950-2000’s.

Eloise asked me ‘Why French Cinema?’

I thought for a moment and said ‘I have always felt an affinity towards French Culture because french was my first language. Then because I left Belgium (where I was born) and almost completely stopped speaking french, I always felt like a little piece of my heart was with the french language.’

This then struck something within me and made me question why this was. I have always felt a disconnect with my cultural identity due to not knowing anything about my Moroccan heritage or family, and not feeling British enough.

This has always been something I wanted to explore but been too afraid to. However, I feel as though looking at this in a creative and experimental way will really help me to overcome the fear of it and become almost a form of ‘self therapy or discovery’.

For my dissertation, I have a few different avenues that I would like to research to define what lens I would like to look through on the topic of French Cinema:

Cultural Identity using French Cinema as case studies

Cultural Fetishisation

What is film? Linear Narrative or Non-Linear like a series of images?

How has French Cinema changed the face of film?

The use of cinema as a mechanism to break illusion in film

How did the ideas from French Cinema, particularly French New Wave filter into wide stream cinema?

Or just a study of French New Wave Cinema; aesthetic, techniques, methods, concepts

I feel as though this is a good starting point to discover what really interests me enough to write a dissertation.

I am now feeling really excited with a hint of apprehension but looking forward to seeing where I go with it.
