“Styling” by Clare Buckley and Jacqueline McAssey

What interested me surrounding this book is the detailed manner of the variety of still life. Looking into the difference in catalogue still life and editorial makes me think about how I want to capture my still life imagery. The concept of my still life would link to the symbiotic relationship biomaterials have with the natural environment. I could work on decorating the image with the original fruit pulp product to connect it to a more editorial landscape for the imagery. With the catalogue still life, the imagery will connect more towards the colour scheme and details and trims. I think I want to merge both of the styles and keep to the colour theme of the biomaterial while connecting the flat lay with natural elements. The book helped me understand some key techniques of still-life styling. Learning about these key elements helped me feel more confident in planning my still-life photoshoot. For further reading, not discussing still life styling, the book provides a lot of helpful techniques when reviewing commercial and editorial styling that will be helpful for styling for my final fashion shoots. The book discusses the importance of working with primary and secondary research for styling working with collage, which I aim to explore more. For a lot of my styling, I have done secondary research through magazines and trends. I want to expand my styling techniques and work on more styling bodies of work. As my main specialism is photography, the styling goes hand in hand with my self-directed photoshoots, and I do feel quite confident in the genre, but I want to display through my sketchbook and blog more of my styling contextualization through my FMP.
